LINDSAY HAND ENGRAVING EQUIPMENT

Lindsay Classic AirGraver
with PalmControl
Impact Per Minute range:  1,500 through 15,000

The Lindsay AirGraver™ is a self-running miniature air engine using no springs or electricity. Just blowing in the handpiece will cause it to run. As this is impractical, the handpiece utilizes one of two types of controllers. One controller is a set of regulators that attaches to an air compressor and a foot pedal. The second option is a PalmControl™ handle that automatically uses the natural palm pressure of the user on the entire handle to control and vary the power of the tool. If a person is accustomed to foot pedal engraving, a few minutes with the PalmControl™ is all it takes to realize the improved responsiveness. The hand is more sensitive than the foot, and capable of subtle corrections. Because the tool is self-contained, there is no need for constant background noise or vibration from a separate power unit.    Above photograph, Barry Lee Hands miniature English scroll engraving with PalmControl pictured next to a nickel.

The Classic AirGraver™ includes a patented ring or barrel around the outside of the tool that works in a manner similar to the focusing ring on a camera lens. The ring is used to simultaneously adjust the impact speed and power of the tool. Either the PalmControl™ or a foot control pedal is used to vary the air pressure power within each setting range. The mechanism makes one AirGraver handpiece as versatile as a variety of different-sized impacting gravers.

Evolution and history of Lindsay AirGravers

IMPACTS PER MINUTE SPEED RANGE

The Classic  AirGraver comes standard with a stainless piston.  A  Tungsten Dead Blow piston can be purchased separately.  Tungsten weighs  approximately 2.5 to 3 times more than stainless and therefore provides more impact power.  The chart bellow illustrates the speed ranges of the Classic handpiece when set at a short stroke, and  when set at the longest stroke by the use of the patented adjust ring on the handpiece.

CLASSIC AIRGRAVER
Classic AirGraver Handpiece
Includes the length/speed stroke collar, rapid graver change, a Teflon bore in a 303 stainless body, and a hardened 440C stainless piston, anvil, and nose.  No collects required for rapid graver change.  Also included are three high speed steel 3/32" square graver blanks, a leather handpiece pouch, extra screws, wrench and owner's manual. Requires 60psi regulated compressed air from an air compressor.

The length of stroke adjustment collar on the Classic handpiece provides a multitude of hand pieces in one tool. At any given stroke length setting,  the power is varied with air pressure from the foot control or PalmControl (.5psi to 60psi). The absence of an internal spring means uniform performance throughout the range, with no sweet spots or  non-working spots.  The full range of power and speed is consistent throughout due to the internal automatic balance of air pressure on both the impact and return strokes.

The tool requires little air volume for operation. 0.1 to 0.3 CFM depending on the depth of engraving or impact operation.   This means the life of an air compressor will last longer and a smaller compressor can be used.

Includes 10 feet of tubing with a 1/4"NPT fitting for attaching to air compressor.

PALMCONTROL™  HANDLE FOR CLASSIC HANDPIECE

The PalmControl™  handle is placed on a Classic handpiece to provide superior impacting control without a foot pedal. It utilizes the hand pressure applied to hold a graver in a cut to vary and control the impacting power of the tool. This process is intuitive. The tool is capable of producing an enormous range of cuts, from fine banknote-style engraving to removing heavy background. It is equally proficient at bright cutting and stone setting. It requires 60 PSI regulated compressed air from either an air compressor or a CO2 cartridge. No electrical connection is needed.

Graver polishing
Apply diamond compound to the back side of a 1/16" thick steel diamond lap (sold above) and use it for polishing graver facets. When a metal lap is used, some of the diamond will embed itself into the steel preventing it from wiping off. This is called “charging” a lap.

1/4 Micron, 100,000 mesh, 5-gram syringe $25
1/2 Micron, 60,000 mesh, 5-gram syringe $25
1 Micron, 14,000 mesh, 5 gram syringe $25
3 Micron, 8,000 mesh, 5 gram syringe $30
6 Micron, 3,000 mesh, 5 gram syringe $34

Note: The 1/2 Micron is the only one that may be needed for polishing gravers. It cleans up a 1200 grit finish quickly, and leaves a bright finish. If purchasing more than one compound, be sure to devote the backside of a separate steel lap to each.
